2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee: What can you get for that money

Overview

The 2023 Grand Cherokee is a versatile SUV that combines elements of both style and functionality. While the base model Grand Cherokee is still fairly basic, the mid-range and high-end trims come loaded with luxury features and upscale materials that make it a clear cut above its competitors.

Although it has advanced upmarket, the Grand Cherokee has not lost its ability to go off-road--which is expected of a Jeep. You have your choice of three different powertrains: either V-6 or V8 engines, or else a plug-in hybrid system called 4xe. The Grand Cherokee only seats two rows; however, it's just as comfortable for suburban family life as it is when driving through rougher terrain. There's plenty of space inside the cabin for both passengers and cargo alike. But if you have more than two kids in your family , you might want to consider going with the larger (and reviewed separately) three-row Grand Cherokee L instead .

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The new Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, like the last generation model. Jeep also offers its plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain, which consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four and an electric traction motor delivering 375 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque combined . The plugin hybrid's motor is juiced by  a 14 kWh battery pack . Rear wheel drive is standard with the base v 6 , but all wheel drive comes  standard on grand Cherokees with either the v 8 plugged in hybrid powertrain .

The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes standard with several all-wheel-drive systems, including an electronically locking limited-slip differential. The Trailhawk model is equipped with more robust off-road equipment and greater capability, featuring an adjustable air suspension that provides up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and a disconnecting sway bar that allows for better maneuverability on rough terrain.

We were impressed with the Grand Cherokee's smooth ride during our initial test drive. Both the V-6 and V-8 engines felt perky, and our V-6–powered Summit test vehicle ran 0-60 mph in 7.4 seconds at the track.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Grand Cherokee's V-6 fuel economy estimate is average for the mid-size SUV segment at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive drops each of those estimates by 1 mpg; the V-8 model is rated for 14mpg city and 22mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid 4xe delivers better fuel efficiency and is rated for 23mpg city and 24mgp highway.

The Grand Cherokee comes with a 14.0-kWh battery pack and a 134-hp electric motor, meaning it can travel up to 26 miles per charge. Jeep claims that the 4xe powertrain allows the car to drive the entire Rubicon Trail in EV mode. You can find more information about fuel economy on the EPA's website if you're interested

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The new Grand Cherokee comes with a cabin that is updated and modern, replacing the somewhat old interior of the outgoing model. While base Laredo models come with only the essentials, luxury features like quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays can be found in Summit and Overland trims. The Grand Cherokee SUV only has two rows but upgrades to a third row are available in the Grand Cherokee L--which we review separately. We haven't had a chance to test drive it yet ourselves but we believe it will have more space to accommodate carry-on suitcases than its predecessor .

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Grand Cherokee's primary infotainment display hovers 8.4 or 10.1 inches above the dashboard and comes with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. An in-dash navigation system that provides real-time traffic and weather updates is optional but can be extremely useful, especially on longer trips. Higher trim levels boast a digital gauge cluster, a 10.0-inch head up display,  and another passenger entertainment screen measuring 10
