Ikonstudio, a Canadian design institution founded by David Feldberg, has launched its first collections of historically significant furniture, designed by renowned architects Louis Kahn and Robert Sommerfeld (SOM) for the New York office. These pieces were originally conceived in the early 20th century but reimagined to reflect contemporary aesthetics and materials. The collections align with events such as NYCxDesign and Chicago Design Week, highlighting the fusion of historical inspiration with modern innovation. As Feldberg explains, the aim is not merely to revisit the past but to extend architectural concepts into today’s context. The SOM Collection, created with archival work from Rarify, features designs that emphasize total design principles—where every element of a building is crafted to serve both functionality and aesthetics. This approach challenges traditional notions of mass production, inviting designers to explore bespoke solutions while bridging eras. In contrast, the Kahn Collection showcases works inspired by Kahn’s legacy, including the Radbill Oil Company building and the ML Weiss House, which was never realized during his lifetime. Ikonstudio aims to preserve these heritage pieces through contemporary methods, ensuring they remain accessible to future generations.
